A Catalyst-Powered Journey of Mentorship, Skill-Building, and Real Client Success
Catalyst exists to open doors, linking emerging talent with experienced professionals and organisations that can help them thrive. One of the strongest examples of this impact is the journey of Samira Nadeem Awan, who joined Catalyst as a volunteer with an eagerness to grow her digital and marketing skills.
From the outset, Samira showed curiosity, commitment, and creativity. To help nurture her potential, Catalyst paired her with Martin Goncalves, an experienced marketing associate who regularly supports third-sector organisations across Sandwell. Samira began shadowing Martin on live projects, observing real-world workflows while gradually taking on tasks of her own.
Her development was remarkably fast.
Within just a couple of weeks, Samira’s confidence and skill set had grown so significantly that she secured her first paying client: Yahweh Housing, a SWEDA-supported organisation providing vital community services. Impressed by her initiative and professionalism, they commissioned her to design their new logo, develop their website, and set up their social media presence. This relationship has the potential to evolve into an ongoing social media management partnership, demonstrating how quickly Catalyst-supported volunteers can transition into meaningful paid work.

Samira’s momentum didn’t stop there. She continued collaborating with Martin on another project for SWEDA client Dr. Monaa, who runs therapy and yoga sessions across the region. Together, they improved her branding approach, refreshed her marketing strategy, and supported her content planning. This project has opened the door to further opportunities for Samira, with prospects for long-term paid work as Dr. Monaa’s digital presence grows.
These case studies reflect the core of Catalyst’s mission:

- Supporting local organisations with high-quality, affordable talent
- Building connections that result in real economic and community value
Through mentorship, collaboration, and shared learning, Catalyst continues to empower Sandwell residents like Samira to build sustainable careers, while helping organisations access the skills they need to flourish.
